The Vivian locomotive shed was built in the 1920s for the first standard gauge Garrett articulated steam locomotive in Britain.

The locomotive, was built by Messrs Beyer, Peacock & Co Ltd of Manchester, was used to transport materials around the whole of the Hafod works site. The articulation of the engine into three parts enabled it to negotiate tight curves and steep gradients around the site. 

The engine shed was wide enough for a single railway track and there is a service pit which runs the length of the building in the centre of the floor. With its distinctive saw-tooth roof to maximise light and aid the ventilation of steam, the building is mainly built from the black bricks produced on site. On the outside of the building the letters ‘V & S Ltd No. 1 Shed’ are picked out in white glazed bricks.

Adeiladwyd sied peiriant ager Vivian yn ugeiniau’r 19fed ganrif  i’r peiriant ager ‘Garrett’ cyntaf ym Mhrydain fawr.

Defnyddiwyd y peiriant, a adeiladwyd gan Meistri Beyer, Peacock a’u cwmni ym Manceinion, i dynnu nwyddau o gwmpas safle gwaith Morfa.  Roedd y peiraint wedi’w rannu mewn i dri cymal a oedd yn ei alluogi i weithio dros trofeydd tyn ac elltydd serth o gwmpas y safle.

Roedd y sied peiriant dim ond digon o led i un llwybr rheilffordd.  Mae pwll gwasanaeth yng nghanol y llawr sy’n rhedeg trwy holl hyd yr adeilad.  Mae ganddo do ‘dant llif’ i hwyluso goleuo’r sied ac i gael gwared o’r ager.  Adeiladwyd y sied o briddfeini du a wnaethpwyd ar y safle.  Tu allan, gellir gweld ‘V & S Ltd No. 1 Shed’ wedi’w ysgrifennu mewn priddfeini gwyn gwydraidd.
