Completed in 1910, the Musgrave engine house replaced an older engine house from 1818, and still houses the remains of the Musgrave steam engine which drove Swansea’s last copper rolling mills until the works closed in 1980. The square chimney is connected to the engine house below ground level and is 27 metres tall.
The taller circular chimney is over 32m high and was completed in 1862 together with the Vivian engine house. With its distinctive circular windows, the Vivian engine house once housed a vertical steam engine to drive a rolling mill.
The black bricks, used in the construction of both engine houses are made using waste, or slag, from the copper smelting process.
The two surviving chimneys are all that remains of over 150 chimney stacks that once lined the lower Swansea valley and are iconic reminders of Swansea’s copper heritage.

Mae’r simnai talach crwn dros 32 medr o uchdwr ac fe’i adeiladwyd yn 1862, ynghyd a thŷ peiriant Vivian. ‘Roedd yr adeilad yma, gyda’i ffenestri crwn nodweddiadol, arfer cynnwys peiriant ager unionsyth i yrru melin wasgu.
Cafodd y priddfeini du, a ddefnyddiwyd i adeiladu’r ddau dŷ peiriant, eu gwneud o ddefnyddiau gwastraff o’r broses toddi copr.
Y ddau simnai yma ydi’r unig rai sydd wedi parhau allan o dros 150 oedd arfer sefyll ar hyd ddyffryn Tawe isaf ac maent yn atgof grymus o dreftadaeth copr Aberatwe.
