The limekiln, built from Pennant sandstone quarried from Kilvey Hill, dates from the late nineteenth century and is the last surviving example of the fifty four limekilns that once stood alongside the Swansea Canal.

Limekilns convert limestone rock into powdered `quick lime` for uses as varied as: the smelting of some metals, including iron; as a nutrient for soil in farming; for lime mortar in building construction and for lime wash (whitewash) for painting walls.

With the limestone rock brought in by canal and later by rail from the Oystermouth Quarry at Mumbles, copper slag waste from the Hafod works was built up to form a ramp to the top of the limekiln and the limestone was then tipped in at the top.

Limekilns burn wood and coal with crushed limestone and convert it into a powdered substance called lime. Each firing cycle took seven days. This kiln was used to produce lime mortar for the construction industry
